Dual students at FEIG appreciate the interesting projects during the practical phases and the optimal support.

Julian Frensch is completing a dual course of study in engineering and electrical engineering at FEIG, specializing in technical computer science. He spends his practical phases in our “Identification and Payment” technology department. During lecture times, he attends StudiumPlus events at the Technical University of Central Hesse in Wetzlar. In an interview he talks about his previous experiences in the dual study program and his practical phases.

Why did you choose this dual study program and FEIG?

When I was looking for companies that offer my course of study, I came across the company FEIG and decided to send FEIG my application documents. After my interview and a tour of the development department, I was sure that I would accept the position if it was offered to me.

What do you like best about your dual study program?

I am a very big fan of the integrated practical phases between semesters. There I can grow into my career through interesting projects and gain practical experience. This way I won’t be thrown into the deep end after I graduate. The small groups at Studium Plus are also a huge advantage compared to a normal course of study. Here it is much easier to understand the content and get to know your fellow students quickly.

If you think back, what were the highlights of your time studying at FEIG?

Starting in the first two shorter practical phases, it was exciting to gain initial experience in the area of microcontroller programming. Initially a little easier with a Raspberry Pi with a Linux operating system and then completely hardware-related microcontroller programming with STM32. I was then able to gain experience with various interfaces such as UART or USB. My first big project was to develop and implement an automatic test setup for our RFID readers. Now in my project studies I am developing the software for communication via BLE for one of our readers.

How does a practical phase at FEIG typically work?

At FEIG, you receive a project from your practical phase supervisor either before or at the start of the practical phase, which will be worked on during the practical phase. If I have any problems, I can always contact my supervisor, who will help me move forward. There is enough time throughout the practical phase to successfully work on the project and write the practical phase report for StudiumPlus.

How would you describe your course of study in three sentences?

Electrical engineering with a specialization in technical computer science deals with the interface between hardware and software. Hardware-related development is carried out here, so it’s not just about simply writing software, but also about understanding the hardware at hand and adapting the software to it. Microcontrollers are present in almost every technical device these days and a large part of the course prepares students to learn how to program them.

Would you choose a dual study program with FEIG as your partner company again?

In any case. If I think about the interesting projects I was able to work on during my studies at FEIG and how much I grew as a developer as a result, I would choose FEIG again and again. I am also very grateful for the good support and approachability when problems arise.

What advice would you give to people who are considering applying for a dual study place at FEIG?

Don’t hesitate for long, just apply. FEIG has a lot to offer in terms of expertise on the courses you can apply for here and I can assure you that you will be well looked after at FEIG. At the latest when you are here for the job interview and can take a look at the company, you will notice that you are in good hands here.
